Laser Hair Removal FAQ

How does laser hair removal work?

A laser emits a beam of light attracted to the pigment or coloring in your hair follicles that are actively growing. Based on your personal consultation, we configure our machines with duration and energy settings most appropriate for your hair type and coloring. The laser beam is then pointed at (and absorbed by) your hair follicles, providing fast, effective, and safe hair removal.

Why are laser treatments better than other hair removal techniques?

Lasers are an advanced and precise technology that can be tuned to the exact parameters necessary to immobilize specific hair follicle types. Unlike other medical techniques such as electrolysis, lasers can treat many hairs at once instead of just one hair follicle at a time. This means we can remove hair from wide areas of your body (like your back, upper leg or forearm) at once in a shorter period than if we had to remove hair follicle-by-follicle. In addition, laser hair removal lasts much longer than traditional hair removal techniques like chemical depilation, shaving, tweezing or waxing.

Does it hurt? What does laser hair removal feel like?

You may feel a slight prickling or stinging sensation during treatment, but it's not usually painful. Most people don't mind the sensation, but since everyone has a different sensitivity threshold -- and some treatment areas are more sensitive than others -- we also offer a topical numbing cream if this is a concern for you.

Who performs the laser hair removal procedure?

All laser treatments -- whether for hair removal or skin rejuvenation -- are performed by fully trained and certified practitioners.

Are there any side effects to laser treatment?

During the procedure you may experience a reddening of your skin, kind of like a sunburn, but that redness should gradually disappear over the course of several hours. Immediately following your laser treatment you can continue with your normal daily activities. There is no recovery or down-time needed.

How long will the laser hair removal procedure take?

We can usually treat your full legs or back in about 45 to 60 minutes. Smaller areas will take less time.

How many laser treatments will I need?

The number of treatments you require will depend on your skin tone, hair type and other factors that can include medications you take or hormonal levels. Our clients usually need about 5 to 6 treatments, with an occasional touchup as necessary, as long as they follow our recommended treatment plan.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair technology has FDA approval for permanent hair reduction, not permanent removal. That said, most of our clients find that their hair doesn't re-grow. In fact, most find that up to 90% of their hair is permanently removed; the remaining hair is lighter and softer.

At the time of treatment, some of your hair follicles will be dormant and not in an active growing phase. There's no way to know when, or even if, those dormant follicles will begin to re-grow because of different hormone levels, certain medications, or even stress. That's one reason why multiple treatments are strongly recommended.

What can I expect after treatment?

After your first treatment you'll see a significant decrease in hair. But it takes anywhere from two to four weeks for the treated hair to push its way to your skin's surface and then fall out. We schedule several follow-up appointments in four to eight week intervals after your first treatment so that we can treat any hair that was dormant during the initial phase.

It's important to be sure to keep any and all follow-up appointments; because your hair follicles are in different phases of the growth cycle at any given time, it's only through several subsequent treatments that we can be sure to catch the follicles in the necessary active growing stage. If you follow the prescribed treatment schedule, anticipate anywhere from 85-90% hair removal.

Do I need to grow out my hair before treatment the way I do with waxing?

There's no need to grow your hair out before treatment. That said, you'll need to refrain from any hair removal technique that removes the root of the hair (ie waxing, tweezing, threading) for a full two weeks before treatment. We suggest you shave the area you'd like treated. Why is it important not to remove the root of the hair? Laser technology targets the root: if it's not present, the treatment won't be effective.

Does it matter what hair color I have?

Lasers are attracted to the pigment in your hair follicle, so lighter hair colors, like gray, blonde, white, red -- or even light fine hair -- may not have enough pigment to be successfully treated by a laser. If you have light, fine hair, you may want to do a spot test on a small section of hair first to see if your hair type is likely to respond to treatment.

Pigmented Lesion Removal FAQ

What kind of pigmented lesions does laser technology work on?

Our laser technology can remove pigmented lesions and treat sun damage, brown spots, uneven skin tones, and acne scars.

How many treatments will I need?

It will take several treatments to fully remove pigmented lesions. Anticipate at least 5 visits, although for some individuals and for some lesions we can complete the process in fewer appointments.

What does laser pigmented lesion removal feel like?

Some people compare the sensation to the snap of a rubber band. It's not painful, but everyone has a different sensitivity level -- and some areas are more sensitive than others -- so if you're concerned about pain we have a topical numbing cream we can use.

What can I expect after pigmented lesion laser removal?

Within a half hour after the treatment, you will develop a slightly darker color. The discolored lesion should fall out within two to three weeks following the treatment. For the first few days, the treated area may feel slightly sore, like a sunburn, and will look light a light burn, although in some cases you may even see a blister develop. It's very important to follow all of our instructions after treatment -- like staying out of the sun for at least four weeks -- so you can avoid irritating the area. If you can't avoid the sun, be sure to use an SPF 30 or higher sunscreen.

Is there anything I need to do before my treatment?

Avoiding sun exposure before and after treatment is essential: stay out of the sun for at least four weeks before and four weeks after treatment. If you can't avoid sun exposure, be sure to use an SPF 30 or higher sunscreen.

Laser Facials FAQ

What can a laser facial do?

Laser facials can reduce wrinkles and remove facial veins, skin discoloration, rosacea, acne scars, sun damage, and large pores. This safe and effective form of skin therapy will leave you with softer, younger looking skin without any side effects like skin irritation or bruising.

What areas can you treat?

Our laser facial treatments can safely target your face, neck and chest.

Is there anything I need to do to prepare for my laser facial?

Right before treatment we'll ask you to remove all make-up and moisturizers. Sometimes we may ask you to shave the area we're going to treat so your hair doesn't interfere with the laser, but your certified laser technician will review all prerequisites with you, so there'll be no guesswork.

How many treatments will I need?

Laser facial results are very subtle. Most of our clients find that they have optimal results in four to six treatments, but some skin conditions require more sessions and others require less. Your certified laser technician will discuss beforehand, your expectations and how many treatments will be needed to achieve the look you want.

What does a laser facial feel like? Is it painful?

No, laser facials aren't painful. Some people describe the sensation as a gentle warming feeling.

Laser Vein Removal FAQ

Can laser therapy work on my leg veins?

Laser therapy doesn't work on all leg veins, so you'll need to meet with your Beautix technician beforehand to assess your particular case. Previous surgeries and treatments or an underlying venous problem can affect whether or not laser therapy will work for you.

What does laser leg vein removal feel like?

Most people don't feel anything, but some describe the feeling as a mild stinging sensation.

How long will laser vein removal treatments last?

It depends on the size and number of veins you want treated, but expect the session to last anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes.

How many treatments should I expect?

Most clients require one to three treatment sessions scheduled eight weeks apart. Sometimes, however, you may develop new spider veins and need additional treatments.

What should I expect after treatment?

You can return to your normal daily activities immediately. For 24 hours after your laser vein removal, you should avoid vigorous exercise, hot tubs, and sun exposure. If you can't avoid the sun, be sure to use an SPF 30 or higher sunscreen.
